Internship/Volunteering Opportunity: Seedlings Space – St. Paul, Minnesota

The Seedlings Project is an organization working in the field of Asian-American social and political rights, individuality, creativity through the works of art and literature. The Seedling Projects represents arts and literature from the Asian Islander Pacific Community in North America, and was established in 2013. Seedlings Projects activities are coordinated and implemented from the organization’s headquarters in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Interns are offered a unique work experience, with a wide range of responsibilities in a multicultural environment that uses English as the main working language. Each intern is given the opportunity to develop and implement their academic, organizational, political, administrative and research skills.

Interns are expected to undertake tasks that include the organization of conferences, seminars and other events, the monitoring of Social or Political activities involving the Asian Pacific Islander Community (with possible attendance depending on the period of engagement), the conducting of research.
Interns are expected to have a mature and flexible attitude, display good time management skills, be able to undertake work independently and conduct accurate research. The intern should enjoy working in an multicultural oriented office where a multitude of tasks will be assigned.

The internship requires a high degree of responsibility and autonomy from the intern, but in turn promises an equally rewarding experience.

Essential:

– Genuine interest in and basic knowledge of journalism, writing, editing. photography and/or graphic designing.
– Ability to work under limited supervision and take initiative under tight deadlines.
– Ability to run short term, self-directed projects.
– Excellent command of oral and written English.
– Good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
– Good knowledge of the new social media.

Desirable:
– Working knowledge of other Asian languages, cultures or history.
– Basic knowledge of website management.
– Basic knowledge of office management and/or teamworking.
– Experience in project proposal development and fundraising.

Roles & Responsibilities

Below you will find various roles and positions that are available. Please express the role(s) in which you are most interested in.

Apply to be a Staff Writer:

As a Seedlings Staff Writer, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend at least one of the two meetings the staff has every month. Meetings will happen on the first and third week of every month.
  • Write quality content for the Seedlings Project in a timely manner (this entails at least one piece of article per publication)
  • Meet deadlines for assignments and tasks

As a Staff Writer, you may write for one or more columns/categories. You must report stories to the designated Staff Editor to revise and proof-read your piece. You have the freedom to choose what you want to write about (so long as it is unprejudiced, not discriminatory nor slander), but we also ask that you present your topic of interest in a creative and interesting way.

Apply to be a Staff Editor:

As a Seedlings Staff Editor, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend at least one of the two meetings the staff has every month. Meetings will happen on the first and third week of every month.
  • Manage Staff Writers under your column (i.e. LifeStyle, Art, Media, More+) to make sure deadlines are met in a timely fashion
  • Edit and revise stories and articles under your column; send back commentary to Staff Writers in a timely fashion so Staff Writers may make final edits before publication
  • Write quality content for your column in a timely manner
  • Meet deadlines for assignments and tasks

Apply to be Secretary:

As a Seedlings Secretary, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending every meeting. Meetings will happen on the first and third week of every month. If you cannot attend every meeting, you must find a substitute or another Seedlings Member to take on your role.
  • Take studious notes of meetings

Apply to be Treasurer:

As a Seedlings Treasurer, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating a budget with the Seedlings funding
  • Be in charge of handling the Seedlings bank account balance; this entails withholding receipts, cash, and checks.
  • Allocating funds for events.
  • Actively working to create more funds for Seedlings through asking for donations and sponsorships

Apply to be Public Relations Officer:

As a Seedlings Public Relations, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning, developing and implementing PR strategies
  • Liaising with and answering inquiries from media, individuals and other organizations
  • Manage social media relations (through Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
